Earrings and bracelets ruled the red carpet - with more than a few jeweled Judith Leiber purses thrown in for good measure.

The 61 Primetime Emmy Awards was held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles CA on September 20. As usual, gorgeous jewelry and garments were worn by most celebrity attendees. Wondering who wore what? Here’s a guide to some actors and the designers who provided their accessories:

Jewelry Designer Fred Leighton:

Marcia Gay Harden wore diamond shoulder duster dangling earrings. Her gown had a lot going on with a very busy fabric pattern. For an uncomplicated look, always use an opposite effect when picking out jewelry to match garments. A lot of detail either with the fabric pattern or the design of the garment itself, the less jewelry or any accessory for that matter should be worn. For this fabric design, the shoulder duster earrings were just enough.

Mila Kunis wore a stunning burgundy gown, which was accented with dangling two-part diamond earrings. The earrings consisted of a diamond post from which an elaborate diamond studded drop fell. Her gown was classic and she looked lovely in it. The complicated design of the earrings perfectly complimented the fairly simple gown. While burgundy is a beautiful hue, it is hard to find colored gemstones that will combine well. Sticking with diamonds and gold was a wise choice.

Jewelry Designer Lorraine Schwartz:

Debra Messing wore a thick diamond and gold cuff bracelet with a matching ring worn on her middle finger. Her earrings were organic in shape – gold and diamonds resembling multi-part leaves hanging from a branch. The gold and diamonds went perfectly against her red gown. Gold is always the best metal to wear with lipstick red. And since red is such a strong color, it is hard to find colored gemstones to work well with it. When picking out jewelry to go with a strong color, it's best to keep jewelry color to a minimum. Otherwise, neither the jewelry nor the garment will get the attention it deserves.

Heidi Klum was dressed in black and wore gothic looking shoulder duster earrings. The top of the earrings resembled a Celtic knot. The knot was hung with multiple tassels. She also wore three rings on her right hand. One was in an Egyptian snake design. All items perfectly coordinated with her black maternity gown.

Dana Delaney wore a gorgeous wavy diamond cuff bracelet that accessorized perfectly with her clutch handbag. She also wore large circular diamond earrings that hung from a double diamond post and had a diamond hanger in the middle of the circle.

Celebrity Jewelry Picks

  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus accessorized a blue gown with diamond chandelier earrings by jewelry designer Neil Lane.
  • Sandra Oh wore a gold gown which she very simply accessoried with gold pod shaped drop earrings by Tacori.
  • Kristin Chenoweth’s understated earrings were by Tiffany and Co.
