Feathered jewelry and various size and style open-link chains are hot jewelry picks for fall and winter 2007.

Going into fall and winter of this year, the following jewelry looks are showing up in various fashion magazines and runway shows. The good news is that achieving these looks on a budget is going to be quite easy if one stays away from the designer version of each style.

Feather Jewelry – the types of feathers predominately being shown are dyed goose feathers, peacock and pheasant feathers. The feathers are fabricated into earrings, necklaces and bangle bracelets to compliment the outrageous number of feathered dresses, head ornaments, handbags and shoes that are coming down the runway for winter.

Goose feathers are shown dyed in a myriad of colors not found in nature. The peacock feathers being used are those from the male of the species – in the gorgeous blue and green color spectrum. Pheasant feathers are very fall- and winter-hued in muted shades of brown, black and tan.

How practical and for that matter washable Is feather jewelry? Bangle bracelets, which are subject to an enormous amount of wear and tear, are the least practical of feathered jewelry. Feathered earrings, as long as care was taken to not tangle them in a comb, should be quite sturdy. As an added precaution, the wearer should always make sure the earrings are put on after all grooming or fragrance products are applied.

Suggestions for purchase:

Precious Metal and Plated Open Loop Chains:

The chains being shown have interesting open loop combinations mixing style, size and metal type shown on individual pieces. For example, a large loop oval shaped chain paired with a smaller loop figaro style chain. ShopBop.com is offering a "feminine meets street-look" version of a chain choker by Bing Bang. This necklace combines a large curb chain with smaller curb chain links used as extenders.

Chain mail, while never really going out of style, is being pushed this season. Chain mail jewelry has its roots in the armour worn in Medieval times. Whole upper body outfits were constructed of this type of linked chains producing a sort of bulletproof jacket of the era. The bullets in this case were curved daggers and swords that could not penetrate the chain maille.

Basically, chain mail is merely jump rings that are connected and arranged in various patterns. The patterns are limitless from the quite simple two jump links design to much more complicated designs that almost look like crocheted chain.

Combining these two elements – for those jewelry lovers with more than $5,000 to spend on a single piece of jewelry – Louis Vuitton has a feathers-and-gold-link chain necklace available this season that is truly spectacular.

Continuing with fall and winter trends, the next article will discuss hot semi-precious gemstones.
