The Oversized Statement Necklace Migrates Down to Delicate

Over the whole larger than life statement necklace trend this year? There's a breeze in the air touting a return to delicate jewelry.

The JA New York Summer Show opened this past Sunday. While this year’s oversized statement necklaces were prevalent, there seems to be a return to prior season’s smaller, delicate necklaces.

One possible reason for what seems to be the start of a gradual shift is the fact that big plays well on the runway and at special events however, what’s actually selling is the smaller pieces of jewelry.

This fact is not too surprising in light of the customer comments at Target.com regarding the retail giant’s Subversive line of jewelry. While this is a fabulous jewelry line, most negative comments took issue with the fact that the jewelry was just too darn big. Of course, these responses were from online shoppers. The problem being that Target doesn’t give adequate size information in the item description.

Getting Back to Jewelry Appropriate for the Workplace

Additionally, the large, multi-layered statement necklaces just aren’t appropriate for a lot of daywear. Just as the perpetual noise from bunch of jangling metal bracelets can lead fellow cube mates to a revolution, layered large statement necklaces can clunk and clang against each other causing similar workplace noise. Moreover, honestly if taking public transportation to work, is it prudent to look for attention by blinding fellow commuters with the glare from oversized jewelry?

Make a Statement with Delicate Jewelry by Stacking and Layering

Designers of the delicate pieces encourage customers to make their individual statement by combining delicate necklace or stacking thin low profile rings. This was a big look last year with multiple 1mm or 2mm precious metal chains twisted together and hung with charms.

This year delicate chains combine with large crystal or semi-precious gemstone pendants. Just make sure the chain is sturdy enough to support the weight of the pendant.

Back in the beginning of this year, the concept of stacking was very common with bracelets.

Now, not to say that any investment made in the big statement necklace is a waste of money. The summer show‘s trend seminar was held on July 28. Jewelry Information Center spokesperson Helena Krodel predicted that the statement bib and V-shaped styles would still be quite popular in the near future.

Emerging Trends in Delicate Jewelry

  • Pavé-set diamond pendants. Not sure what pavé-set is? Think of pavers set in a garden path – many small stones are set closely together. The desired effect is to conceal the metal in which the gemstones are set.
  • Matte-metal look jewelry – also known as brushed jewelry. The matte look is normally achieved by buffing the metal with a piece of steel wool.
  • Textured hoop earrings – bamboo texture is still very big this year
  • Delicate drop earring hung with gemstones or charms
  • Charms with a purpose
