The 4th of July is right around the corner. It's not too late to purchase some patriotic jewelry to wear this special holiday in the USA.

USA patriotic jewelry typically is based upon Old Glory’s colors of red, white and blue. Here’s a very brief summary of how the first USA flag came to be and the origin of the colors used.

Betsy Ross and the Continental Congress

Betsy Ross was a businessperson and widow who supported herself by operating her own upholstery business. In May 1776, she was approached by three members of the Continental Congress, George Washington, Robert Morris and George Ross, who gave her a rough sketch and asked her to sew the first flag. Betsy Ross had done sewing for Washington in the past; George Ross was a relative of her late husband. There’s no definitive record as to why the three colors were chosen but it’s said that white represented purity and innocence; red, valor, and blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

The flag was official adopted in 1977 by the Continental Congress, who sought to promote USA national pride and unity - "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."

Service Flag Jewelry

Those with a family member serving in the Armed Forces of the United States during any period of war or hostilities have the option of wearing a Service Flag pin or pendant. There are a few variations on the design of Service Flag jewelry. The most common is a white rectangular shape, outlined in red with a blue five-point star in the middle (represents one family member in the service – more stars can be added). If the wearer’s pin has a gold star instead of blue, this indicates the death of the loved one while in the service of their country.

ServiceFlags.com has a wide selection of service jewelry and banners. Authorized by the Department of Defense to manufacture service flags, their service label pins are ¾ inch in length and retail for $3.99. They also sell Service Flag necklaces for $12.99.
