Charmed jewelry is easy to make. Expand upon your jewelry making skills by using Link Locks to attach charms to a bracelet or chain.

This is the fourth and last article in a series on the subject of making charmed jewelry. Specifically a charm bracelet although the basic directions can be used to make any sort of charmed jewelry or perhaps to hang a charm from a buckle on your purse or shoes.

In review, the first article gave some basic information on charmed jewelry. The second article explained how to attach charms to a linked chain by using bails – recommended for beginners because no special tools are required. The third article gave complete instructions using jump rings to attach the charms – also good for beginners who own or want to purchase jump ring pliers.

This last method discussed, using Link Locks, is the least recommended method for beginners. However, if you are proficient at using jump rings and would like to try an alternate method, Link Locks are fantastic way to attach charms.

Link Locks have a locking mechanism that is easy to use. A pair of needle nose pliers is used to lock the assembly is place creating a secure joining of the charm to the chain. In essence, Link Locks are jump rings that lock.

Link Locks can be purchased online from Rio Grande. However, to shop at Rio Grande you must register and open an account. You will then receive a catalog from which to place your order.

They can also be purchased from Land of Odds online. Land of Odds also has a store front in Nashville, Tennesee. However, the price difference between Rio Grande and Land of Odds is huge (roughly double). Unless you are in a big hurry, wait for the catalog to arrive from Rio Grande and order from them. The catalog also has a very useful tutorial on using Link Locks.

Required supplies for your charm bracelet:

  • Open link 7.5 inch in length sterling silver bracelet. If you do not already have one, check out the selection at Fire Mountain Gems. Just make sure the bracelet is at least 3.3mm.
  • Five sterling silver Link Locks purchased from Rio Grande or Land of Odds.
  • A pair of needle nose pliers. These can also be purchased at Fire Mountain Gems or any craft store.
  • Your selection of charms. Five charms were used to make the surfer girl charm bracelet shown on this page. More information on exactly duplicating these charms is given via blog.

How to put your charm bracelet together:

  1. Lay the bracelet flat on a table, making sure all the links are laying in an unkinked manner.
  2. Position your charms around the bracelet, spacing them evenly. Rearrange them until you are happy with their order.
  3. Start with the center charm. Pick up the exact chain link that is in the middle of the bracelet.
  4. Place your charm and the chain link on the Link Lock and use your needle nose pliers to squeeze the Link Lock closed.
  5. Then position your pliers on the locking mechanism itself and squeeze to lock it in place. Please note: Unlike bails or jump rings, Link Locks can not be reopened after locking.
  6. Repeat for the other four charms. Make sure that the charms are evenly spaced around the bracelet and all the charms are facing the same way.

Voila! You are done. Now that you have practice, start making some charmed jewelry to give as holiday gifts or sell at craft shows.
