I’ve been studying fashion magazines and runway shows to present the best of this winter’s jewelry fashion trends.

Based upon what I have seen on the runways and in fashion magazines winter's color forecast is muted hues and tones. Find out what jewelry will complement these colors.

First, let's discuss the neutral colors. Taupe, gray, black and off white remain popular for Winter 2006. The off white that is being shown on the runway is a bleached shell like color without any undertones of pink or yellow.

Neutrals can be combined with any other color for a harmonious look. However, I have yet to find a tone, shade or tint of gray that looks good with yellow gold jewelry. Similarly taupe does looks best with yellow gold jewelry. Black and white look great with either silver or gold.

However, there can be exceptions to every fashion rule. Flipping through W Magazine October 2006, on page 28 there is a perfect depiction of the neutral color palette for winter. The model is shown wearing an off white jacket and taupe tank top with what appears to be a white gold and pearl Balenciaga choker necklace. The choker lies at the hollow of the model's throat.

If you do not have access to that issue of W Magazine the Mossimo tank top from Target that is worn in that ad is shown on this page so you can visualize the tone of the taupe color.

Visually white gold will work with this tank top due to the fact that the tank top is low cut - there is a great expanse of skin between the white gold necklace shown in W and the taupe material of the tank top. Additionally, the taupe tank top is tonal which means the color was mixed by adding gray rather than black. As stated above, gray looks best with silver - in this case white gold.

The dominant hues for Winter 2006 will be muted, rich jewel-like tones - think along the lines of ruby, emerald and sapphire. These tones are created by taking a shade and adding black. For example, taking the primary color red and adding black to create a brick tone.
