Fake Pearls

Think fake pearls are all inexpensive - think again

Even fake, glass pearl necklaces can be pricey if they are designed by an icon such as Judith Leiber

The image shown in my article about pearl jewelry for weddings is my own pearl necklace. The necklace is pretty much a constant in my jewelry selection - that and my two diamond necklaces. No matter what I have on, if I can not find anything else to coordinate with the outfit or if I just run out of time in the morning the pearls or the diamonds are always appropriate.

This necklace is made from 'fake', huge glass pearls with either a white gold or sterling silver accent bead/clasp that I wear in the front instead of the back like a normal clasp. It's been about ten years since I purchased the necklace so I honestly can not remember which precious metal was used to make the clasp.

It's cost back then? - $425 (on sale). Why? The designer was Judith Leiber. Leiber is a celebrity designer favorite who started off by specializing in odd shaped, beaded handbags and has since moved somewhat into jewelry design.

Quality will tell, however. This necklace looks as good today as it did ten years ago when I first purchased it.

I was at WalMart a couple of weeks ago and found some big, glass pearls for $1.99 per bag in their craft department. This week's article will show how you can make your own glass pearl necklace for a fraction of the cost of my Leiber necklace.
