My latest article discusses traveling with jewelry. I gotta say that there is not an event chi chi enough to make me travel with any type of expensive jewelry.
I was in London a few years ago riding the Tube out to Heathrow while wearing one of my many fake pieces of jewelry. The piece in question was a 2 carat CZ set in an ornate gold setting. Alright, that was probably stupid, but when you know how little something costs you tend to be kind of casual about it.
It was attracting quite a few stares and I considered the fact that I could be seriously hurt if someone decided to try to separate me from a relatively cheap piece of jewelry.
Since then I wear almost no jewelry while traveling. It's just not worth the hassle of 'hiding' it in the hotel room when it's not being worn or sticking it in the trunk of the rental car. However, I must admit that I just do not attend events where one is judged by the the fire power of their jewelry. And, it's pretty much assumed that I must have quite the arsenal of fine jewelry (not true - most of it gets sold to customers).
On a side note - I just got back from Newport, RI last week. I did travel with a pair of Swarovski crystal earrings that I inadvertently left in a zippered pocket on the outside of my checked bag. I remembered them about 15 minutes after I checked the bag.
At $40 for the pair of earrings, it was one of those 'oh,well' situations. However, had they been a pair of diamond earrings, I would have been frantic.
The earrings were in the bag on arrival.
